Question 9

Living urban life comes with advantages of great facilitis and amenities but it cuts both ways as there exist a number of challenges that city dwellers have to face on their day to life as well. To counteract the issues, among many possible remedies, one feasible approach could be the promotion of rural migration by the governments. In this essay, I will outline three commonly encountered problems in the big cities and evaluate the effectiveness of decentralization as a solution of the issues.
Regarding the hazards of city life, perhaps the dominant one is the burden of population. This is because of the presence of wide-ranging employment opportunities are on offer in the cities. People from the rural areas or urban sprawls are moving into the cities in the hope of living a better life or to simply earn their livelihood. This contributes to the accomodation and the traffic problems of the city. The second key issue is the ever-rising environmental pollution in diiferent forms. To illustrate this, the noise level that is produced by the traffic on the roads or the widespread factories, is beyond the human capcity and as a consequence people are often suffering from diseases like high blood pressure, anxiety disorder an so on. On the top of that, air pollution is also posing a great threat to the city people, specially to the children. Another crisis that may be encountered in the cities is the lack of socializing and family bond, which is an effect of materialistic life-style lead by the inhabitants here.
To address the present problems in the cities, a number of steps could be undertaken and decentralization should be prioritized before considering the rest. This can be achieved by establishing more work-places, educational instiutions and entertainment centres outside the city areas of the country. By doing so, the crisis of overcrowding and pollution can be minimized, and over and above that less people would mean less competetions for life, and this in turn will allow the city-dwellers to interact more with each other and foster the social harmony.
To sum up, the challenges of living in the cities are primarily to do with overpopulation, environmental hazards and social isolation, and these can be dealt with, to a great extent, by promoting living outside the cities.
